Chiropractic and Scoliosis

July 15, 2025

It is estimated that 2–3% of the population suffers from scoliosis.

Scoliosis is a spinal disorder characterized by an abnormal sideways S-shaped or C-shaped curvature of the spine. It affects people of all ages, and the level of severity is primarily dependent on the degree of deformity.

Some sufferers are born with congenital scoliosis as a result of embryological malformation of one or more vertebrae. Others may develop neuromuscular scoliosis, which can be associated with a neurological or muscular disease. However, most cases are deemed idiopathic scoliosis—meaning “without known cause.”

Unfortunately, idiopathic scoliosis makes up about 80% of all cases.

The onset of scoliosis is usually diagnosed between the ages of 10–15, and more recent studies have discovered that it occurs equally among both genders.

Scoliosis is progressive and non-curable.

It will get worse over time if left untreated.

Chiropractic can help slow the progression and, in some cases, keep it from getting worse.

When detected early, it is possible to correct scoliosis and, with continued maintenance, avoid future regression

Chiropractors may not be able to “fix” scoliosis, but routine adjustments can help:

  • Restore spinal alignment
  • Improve posture
  • Decrease pain associated with muscle strain
  • Improve blood flow throughout the body

As a continual form of treatment, chiropractic care is a safe and affordable way to manage the negative effects of scoliosis—especially when used in combination with regular use of a brace.

Living with scoliosis? You’re not alone.

If you suffer from scoliosis, you're likely familiar with:

  • Neck, shoulder, and hip pain
  • Headaches
  • Tingling sensations in your limbs caused by the curvature putting pressure on other areas of your body

By manipulating the spine’s misalignments through manual adjustments and/or traction therapy, patients with scoliosis can experience both short- and long-term relief.

It’s a non-drug, non-invasive option that has been noted to make the effects of scoliosis more manageable over time.
